Things that go bump in the night
So...Friday night we were really tired and went to bed around 10:00. At about 10:45 I heard a noise outside. I thought it was my imagination and tried to go back to sleep. Just then, someone started to jiggle the doorknob of our apartment! It scared me and I tried to wake Ben up to come to the door with me. He was out cold, so I went into the living room alone. The person was still trying to get the door open! I started yelling, "Who's there?" and holding the chain lock.
The person yelled back, "Open!" Finally, I screamed for Ben to come into the living room and he (all 6 feet and shirtless) flung open the door. In our doorway stood a tiny Asian man with two boxes of Smuckers Uncrustables under his arm. Seriously. We believe that he was staying with family and had come to wrong apartment, but he didn't say anything. He just left. In the end, I think we scared him more than he scared us.

Local News
This happened right here in Jackson and now is it making national news. This man owns a local antique shop. I heard him on the radio this morning and he sounded really nice. He is doing well, but the po po still have not caught the men who did this.
Wedding ring deflects bullet Dec. 3: JACKSON, Miss. - Donnie Register has a new reason to be thankful he's married — police say his wedding band deflected a bullet and probably saved his life.
Two men walked into Register's shop at The Antique Market on Saturday and asked to see a coin collection, police Sgt. Jeffery Scott said.
When Register retrieved the collection, one of the men pulled a gun and demanded money. A shot was fired as Register threw up his left hand, and his wedding ring deflected the bullet, police said.

That must be one nice ring. I bet the wife is glad she went the extra mile on that one.
Apparently, the ring was strong enough to split and deflect the bullet pieces into his ear, neck, and finger. On the radio this morning, the guy said that the doctors had to leave part of a bullet in his neck, but he will have full use of his fingers and make a full recovery.

UPDATE: They caught one of the guys and are planning to prosecute to the fullest extent. Also, they showed this guy's shot up finger on the local news. It was not nice for meal time.

Have you heard of this?
I saw this report on CNN about Freegans who, although they have money, choose to forage for their meals.
According to Wikipedia:
Freeganism is an anti-consumerism lifestyle. The lifestyle involves salvaging discarded, unspoiled food from supermarket dumpsters that have passed their expiration date, but are still edible and nutritious. They salvage the food not because they are poor or homeless, but as a political statement.
They believe that they can find just about anything and everything in the trash. Soooo, they go to the trash bins at restaurants, corporations and grocery stores and pull out what they want. They not only find food, but also pet products, home furnishings, etc.
As a further sign of my obsessive cleaning, I was watching this and just hoping that they clean up the trash after they go through it.
While I certainly object to waste and hyper-materialism, I am not here yet. And, it is freaking me out. I can't stop thinking about these people digging through the trash and what else might be in there. These are pics of actual freegans digging through dumpsters:

And here is Ben posing near the trash that was all over the street in Rome. I have a feeling there are not a lot of Freegans in Italy:
